Wisdom Tooth Extraction in Surat

Wisdom Tooth Extraction at InfiSmiles Dental Clinic, Surat

Wisdom teeth are the last teeth to come in, and for many people there is not enough room for them. When they get stuck or grow at an angle, they can cause pain, swelling, infection and damage to the tooth in front. Not every wisdom tooth needs to come out, so the first step is to find out what yours is doing.

At InfiSmiles Dental Clinic we examine the tooth, take an X-ray and explain whether removal is needed, which type of extraction suits you and what to expect. Wisdom tooth extraction in Surat is led here by Dr. Dhaval Patel, Chairman of InfiSmiles, who has served patients for more than 18 years. You can visit our Sayan or Sarthana (Nana Varachha) branch.

What Is a Wisdom Tooth?

A wisdom tooth, or third molar, is one of up to four teeth at the very back of the upper and lower jaws. They usually appear between the ages of 17 and 25. Some people have fewer than four, and some never have any.

Key Facts About Wisdom Teeth

  • They are the last teeth to come through, at the back of the upper and lower jaws.
  • They usually erupt between 17 and 25 years of age.
  • Many jaws do not have enough room, so teeth can come in crooked, partly or not at all.
  • A wisdom tooth stuck in the gum or bone is called an impacted tooth.
  • Wisdom teeth that are healthy, fully erupted and easy to clean may not need to be removed.

Signs You May Need Wisdom Tooth Removal

Wisdom tooth removal is usually advised when a tooth is causing problems or is likely to. Common signs are:

  • Pain or pressure at the back of the jaw, sometimes spreading to the ear or head
  • Red, swollen or tender gums around a partly erupted tooth
  • A bad taste or smell from the back of the mouth, which can be linked to bad breath
  • Difficulty opening the mouth fully
  • Food repeatedly trapped behind the last molar
  • Decay or damage in the wisdom tooth or the tooth in front of it
  • Repeated gum infections in the same area (pericoronitis)

Wisdom tooth pain can come and go, so a flare-up that settles is still worth checking. Our guide on wisdom tooth pain, causes and relief explains what you can do while waiting for an appointment.

When to Get Urgent Dental Care

See a dentist or doctor the same day if you have facial swelling that is spreading, fever, difficulty swallowing or breathing, or you cannot open your mouth. These can be signs of a spreading infection.

Do All Wisdom Teeth Need to Be Removed?

No. We usually advise wisdom tooth removal when:

  • The tooth is impacted and causing pain, swelling or repeated infection
  • A gum flap over the tooth keeps getting infected
  • The tooth or the tooth in front has decay that is hard to treat. Decay is covered on our tooth decay page, and a neighbouring tooth with deep decay may need a root canal or filling
  • The tooth is damaging the neighbouring tooth or bone
  • A cyst or other problem is seen on an X-ray
  • Your dentist or orthodontist advises removal before other treatment, such as braces

If a wisdom tooth is healthy, fully erupted and easy to clean, we may simply monitor it with regular check-ups and X-rays. Removing teeth that cause no problems is not usually necessary.

Types of Wisdom Tooth Extraction in Surat

The type of extraction depends on how the tooth is positioned. We confirm this with an X-ray before we plan treatment.

Simple Extraction: If the tooth has fully come through the gum and is easy to reach, the dentist loosens it with instruments and removes it without cutting the gum. This is the quickest type, and recovery is usually the easiest.

Surgical Extraction for Impacted Wisdom Teeth: If the tooth is stuck in the gum or bone, a small opening is made in the gum to reach it. A little bone may be removed, and the tooth may be divided into sections so it can come out safely. Gum stitches, usually dissolvable, close the area. Impacted wisdom tooth removal in Surat is a minor surgical procedure and recovery takes longer than a simple extraction.

Soft Tissue Impaction Removal: The tooth has come through the bone but is partly covered by gum. The gum is lifted, and the tooth is removed. Removing the tooth also prevents the repeated gum infection (pericoronitis) that happens around partly erupted teeth.

Partial Bony Impaction Removal: The tooth is partly buried in the jawbone. A small amount of bone is removed to expose the tooth, which is then taken out, often in sections.

Complete Bony Impaction Removal: The tooth is fully covered by bone. This is the most involved wisdom tooth surgery in Surat and needs careful planning with X-rays, especially when the tooth lies close to nerves.

Our Wisdom Tooth Extraction Procedure

At our Sayan and Sarthana clinics, wisdom tooth removal follows these steps:

  1. Examination and X-ray: We check the tooth, gums and bite and take an X-ray (OPG, or a 3D scan in complex cases) to see the roots, the bone and nearby nerves.
  2. Treatment plan: We explain whether you need simple or surgical removal, the number of visits, the cost and the risks.
  3. Medical history check: Tell us about medicines, blood thinners, diabetes, heart conditions or allergies so we can plan safely.
  4. Local anaesthesia: The area is numbed so you feel pressure but not pain.
  5. Removal of the tooth: The tooth is loosened and taken out, with bone or gum work if it is impacted.
  6. Stitches if needed and gauze: You bite on gauze to control bleeding.
  7. Aftercare: You receive clear written or verbal instructions, medicines if needed, and a follow-up plan.

Is Wisdom Tooth Removal Painful?

The procedure itself should not be painful because the area is numbed first. You will feel pressure and movement, but not sharp pain. If you feel pain, tell us and we will give more anaesthetic.

Soreness, swelling and stiffness after the numbness wears off are normal, and usually peak in the first two or three days. Pain medicines advised by your dentist usually control this. If you are anxious, tell us beforehand so we can explain each step and go at your pace.

Wisdom Tooth Removal Recovery and Aftercare

Most people feel much better within a few days after a simple extraction. After surgical removal of an impacted tooth, expect about a week of soreness and swelling, and a little longer to feel completely normal. Healing varies from person to person.

The First 24 Hours:

  • Bite gently on the gauze for 30 to 45 minutes. Replace it if it is still bleeding.
  • Do not rinse, spit or touch the area, so the blood clot can form and protect the socket.
  • Use a cold pack on the cheek, 10 minutes on and 10 minutes off, to reduce swelling.
  • Rest with your head raised, and avoid hard exercise.
  • Take the medicines exactly as advised.
  • Wait until the numbness has worn off before you eat, to avoid biting your cheek or tongue.

Days 2 to 7:

  • Rinse gently with warm salt water after meals from day 2, if your dentist agrees.
  • Brush your other teeth as usual and keep the area clean without brushing over the wound. Our oral hygiene tips cover the basics.
  • Warm compresses can ease jaw stiffness after the first 48 hours.
  • Avoid smoking, tobacco, paan and alcohol, which slow healing and raise the risk of dry socket.
  • Do not use a straw for the first few days.

What to Eat After Wisdom Tooth Removal:

Stick to soft, cool or lukewarm foods for the first few days, such as curd, khichdi, mashed potato, soft dal rice, scrambled eggs, soup, banana and ice cream. Avoid hot, spicy, crunchy or hard foods and anything with seeds or small grains that can lodge in the socket. Chew on the other side until it feels comfortable.

Possible Complications

Complications are uncommon but possible. They include dry socket (a lost blood clot, causing severe pain a few days after extraction), infection, prolonged bleeding and, rarely, temporary numbness of the lip or tongue. X-ray planning and following your aftercare instructions lower these risks.

Wisdom Tooth Extraction Cost in Surat

The cost of wisdom tooth extraction in Surat depends on the tooth and the type of removal:

  • Simple or surgical: Simple extraction costs less than surgical removal of an impacted tooth.
  • Depth of impaction: Teeth buried in bone take longer and need more skill.
  • Number of teeth: One tooth, two teeth or all four.
  • Imaging: An OPG X-ray or 3D scan, if needed.
  • Anaesthesia and medicines: Local anaesthesia, any sedation, and prescribed medicines.

After your examination and X-ray at our Sayan or Sarthana branch, you receive a written estimate before treatment begins. You can contact us to book your assessment.
