Dental Crown Treatment at InfiSmiles Dental Clinic, Surat
When a tooth is too damaged for a filling to hold, a crown can protect it, restore its shape and let you chew normally again. A crown, also called a tooth cap, covers the whole visible part of the tooth like a custom-made helmet.
At InfiSmiles Dental Clinic we examine the tooth, take X-rays and explain whether you need a crown, which material suits that tooth and what the treatment will cost. We aim to keep as much of your natural tooth as we can. Dental crowns in Surat are led here by Dr. Dhaval Patel, Chairman of InfiSmiles, who has served patients for more than 18 years. You can visit our Sayan or Sarthana (Nana Varachha) branch.
What Is a Dental Crown (Tooth Cap)?
A dental crown, often called a tooth cap, is a custom-made covering that fits over a damaged tooth. It restores the tooth’s shape, size, strength and appearance. The tooth is shaped slightly so the crown fits over it, and the crown is then cemented in place.
Crowns can be made from metal, porcelain fused to metal, ceramic or zirconia. They are also placed over dental implants and used to hold dental bridges.
Benefits of Dental Crowns
- Protects a weak tooth: A crown holds a cracked or heavily filled tooth together and helps prevent it from breaking.
- Restores chewing: A tooth that was too painful or fragile to bite on can work normally again.
- Improves appearance: A crown can fix the shape, size and colour of a damaged or discoloured tooth.
- Protects after root canal treatment: Back teeth are usually weaker after a root canal, and a crown protects them.
- Completes an implant or bridge: Crowns form the visible tooth on an implant or a bridge.
- Lasts for years: With good care, many crowns last 10 to 15 years or more.

What to Know Before You Choose a Crown
Placing a crown means removing a thin layer of the natural tooth, and this cannot be undone. A crown does not protect the tooth underneath from decay, so cleaning around the gumline still matters. Crowns can chip, loosen or wear, and the tooth may feel sensitive for a short time. We discuss these points before treatment.
When Do You Need a Dental Crown?
A dental crown is usually advised when a tooth cannot be restored safely with a filling. Common reasons are:
- A large cavity, where too little healthy tooth is left for a filling
- A cracked or broken tooth
- A tooth worn down by grinding or acid
- A tooth with several large old fillings that has weakened
- A tooth after root canal treatment, especially a back tooth
- A tooth that will support a dental bridge
- A dental implant that needs a visible tooth
- A cosmetic problem such as a misshapen or badly discoloured tooth
We check the tooth and X-rays first, and recommend the most conservative treatment that will work. Read more about tooth decay and when a dental filling is enough.

Crown, Filling, Onlay or Veneer: Which Do You Need?
A filling repairs a small or moderate cavity. An onlay covers part of the chewing surface when more of the tooth is damaged, but a full crown is not needed. A veneer covers only the front of a tooth for cosmetic reasons. A crown covers the whole tooth and is chosen when most of its structure has been lost or weakened. Your dentist will tell you which is right after an examination.
Types of Dental Crowns Available in Surat
The best material depends on the tooth, your bite and your budget.
Porcelain-Fused-to-Metal (PFM) Crowns: A PFM crown has a metal core covered in tooth-coloured porcelain. It is strong and looks natural from the front, and it suits front and back teeth. Over the years, a thin dark line of metal may show at the gum edge, and the porcelain layer can chip.
Zirconia Crowns: Zirconia is a very strong, metal-free ceramic. Full-contour zirconia crowns are highly resistant to breaking, which makes them a good choice for back teeth and for people who grind their teeth. Layered zirconia crowns look more natural for front teeth. Well-polished zirconia is kind to opposing teeth.
All-Ceramic and Porcelain Crowns: Pressed ceramic and all-porcelain crowns give the most natural look because they let light pass through like enamel, which makes them a popular choice for front teeth. They are metal-free, so they suit patients with metal allergies. They are not as strong as zirconia or metal, so they are not always chosen for heavy back teeth.
Same-Day Crowns (CAD/CAM): Some clinics scan the tooth, design the crown on a computer and mill it from a ceramic block in one visit, so there is no temporary crown. Same-day crowns suit selected cases and tooth positions.
Resin Crowns: Resin crowns cost less but wear down and break more easily. They are usually used as temporary crowns while the final crown is made.
Which Dental Crown Material Is Best for You?
There is no single best crown. For visible front teeth, ceramic or layered zirconia usually gives the most natural result. For back teeth that take heavy chewing, zirconia, PFM or metal are usually chosen for strength. If you grind your teeth, a strong material and a night guard help protect the crown.
If you have a metal allergy, choose a metal-free crown. Your budget and how much tooth remains also matter. We explain the options and the cost differences at the consultation.
If you also want whiter natural teeth, have teeth whitening before the crown is made, because crowns do not change colour and the shade is matched to your teeth at that time.

Dental Crown Treatment Procedure: Step by Step
- Examination and X-ray: We check the tooth, gums and bite, and X-rays show the roots and the amount of healthy tooth.
- Treatment plan: We explain the crown type, number of visits, risks and the cost. If the nerve is damaged, a root canal may be done first.
- Anaesthesia and tooth shaping: The tooth is numbed and a thin layer is removed so the crown can fit over it. Any decay is removed and a build-up is placed if needed.
- Impression or digital scan: An exact record of the tooth, the bite and the neighbouring teeth is taken for the lab or the milling unit.
- Shade selection: We match the colour of the crown to your natural teeth.
- Temporary crown: A temporary crown protects the tooth while the permanent crown is made, usually in one to two weeks.
- Fitting and bite check: The permanent crown is checked for fit, colour and bite, then cemented. We give you care instructions and arrange a review.
Does Getting a Dental Crown Hurt?
The tooth is numbed before it is shaped, so you should not feel pain during the procedure, only pressure and vibration. Tell us at any time if you feel discomfort, and we will give more anaesthetic. After the numbness wears off, the tooth and gum may feel sore, and some teeth are sensitive to hot and cold for a few days or weeks. If the bite feels too high or the sensitivity does not settle, come back so we can adjust it.
Dental Crown Aftercare and How to Make It Last
Caring for a Temporary Crown
- Avoid sticky, hard or chewy foods, and chew on the other side.
- Brush gently and slide floss out sideways instead of pulling it up.
- If it comes off or breaks, call us. Keep the crown safe and do not try to glue it.
Long-Term Care
- Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and floss daily, especially at the gumline where decay can start under a crown. Our oral hygiene tips and guide to protecting teeth from cavities cover the basics.
- Avoid chewing ice, hard sweets or opening packets with your teeth.
- Wear a night guard if you grind your teeth.
- Visit your dentist every six months for check-ups and cleaning.

- Number of crowns: One tooth or several.
